William “Bill” Byrge was born on September 8, 1938, in Nashville, Tennessee, and spent much of his life in the region. He became a familiar face to audiences in the 1980s and 1990s through his work in comedy films and television.


Byrge’s acting career began in 1985 with Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam. He gained widespread recognition as “Bobby,” a quirky character he portrayed alongside Gailard Sartain in numerous Ernest P. Worrell movies, including Ernest Saves Christmas (1988), Ernest Goes to Jail (1990), Ernest Scared Stupid (1991), and Ernest Goes to School (1994). He also reprised the role in the children’s television show Hey Vern, It’s Ernest! and appeared in commercials featuring the “Me and My Brother Bobby” duo.


In addition to acting, Byrge worked for many years as a librarian at the Metro Nashville Public Library, a career he balanced with his time in entertainment. He was also featured in music videos for artists such as Alan Jackson and Ray Stevens, and appeared in commercials throughout the 1990s.


Byrge was a longtime member of Nashville First Baptist Church, where he attended for over 50 years. He was remembered by family and friends as a kind, gentle man who never had an unkind word to say about anyone.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Byrge and Martha Phillips Jones, as well as several siblings. He is survived by his brother Ronald Jones, sisters Charlene Lawson, Jackie Dean, and Pam Van Norstran, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.


Bill Byrge will be remembered for his humor, warmth, and the joy he brought to audiences through his memorable performances. His legacy lives on in the laughter of fans who grew up watching his work.
