Billy Barty, actor, comedian, and tireless advocate for people with dwarfism, died on December 23, 2000, in Glendale, California, at the age of 76. Born William John Bertanzetti on October 25, 1924, in Millsboro, Pennsylvania, he began performing in films as a child and went on to build a career spanning more than seven decades.


Barty appeared in silent films during the 1920s and continued working steadily through Hollywood’s Golden Age, known for his energetic physical comedy and versatility. As an adult, he transitioned into character roles across film and television, appearing in productions such as Willow, Legend, Foul Play, and numerous variety shows. His distinctive presence and comedic timing made him a familiar face to generations of audiences.


Beyond his acting career, Barty became a leading advocate for people with dwarfism. In 1957, he founded Little People of America, an organization dedicated to support, community, and advocacy for individuals with dwarfism and their families. His work helped bring visibility, dignity, and improved opportunities to thousands across the country.


Barty remained active in entertainment and advocacy throughout his life, continuing to perform, speak, and mentor others. His contributions to film, television, and disability rights left a lasting impact on both the industry and the communities he championed.


He is survived by his wife, Shirley, their children, and grandchildren.
