Cicely Tyson, 96, passed away on January 28, 2021, in New York City. Born on December 19, 1924, in the Bronx, she became one of the most respected and influential actresses of her generation, known for her dignified portrayals, artistic discipline, and long‑standing commitment to expanding the representation of Black women in American film, television, and theater.


Tyson began her career as a model before transitioning to acting in the 1950s, earning early recognition for roles that emphasized emotional depth and social realism. She achieved widespread acclaim with performances in productions such as Sounder, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, and numerous stage works, including her Tony Award–winning role in The Trip to Bountiful. Throughout her career, she was deliberate in choosing roles that reflected strength, integrity, and humanity, becoming a trailblazer whose influence extended far beyond the screen and stage.


She is remembered by her family, colleagues, and the many audiences who valued her contributions to the arts, her advocacy for meaningful storytelling, and her enduring legacy in American culture.
