Edward Rudolph Mekjian was born on June 14, 1952, in Worcester, Massachusetts. He studied at the Worcester County Music School and later pursued a career in theater and television.


Mekka rose to national fame in the late 1970s as Carmine “The Big Ragu” Ragusa on the hit sitcom Laverne & Shirley. His character, a dancer and aspiring singer, became a fan favorite and appeared throughout the show’s run. Prior to his television success, Mekka earned recognition on Broadway, receiving a Tony Award nomination in 1975 for his performance in The Lieutenant.


Beyond Laverne & Shirley, Mekka appeared in numerous television series and films, including Moonlighting, Dreamgirls, A League of Their Own, and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. He also toured nationally in stage productions, often performing in musicals that showcased his singing and dancing talents.


Mekka married actress Yvonne Marie Spouse in 1983, and later married actress Anita Gilkey, with whom he had a daughter. He was remembered by colleagues and fans as a warm, energetic performer who brought joy to audiences both on stage and screen.


Eddie Mekka’s legacy endures through his memorable performances and his dedication to the craft of entertainment. His work continues to resonate with audiences who cherished his humor, charisma, and talent.
