Leo “Bud” Welch, blues and gospel musician whose late-blooming career brought him international recognition, passed away on December 19, 2017, in Bruce, Mississippi, at the age of 85. Born March 22, 1932, in Sabougla, Mississippi, Welch grew up immersed in gospel music and the rural blues traditions of the Mississippi hill country.


For much of his life, Welch worked as a logger and laborer while performing locally in churches and small venues. Though he played guitar and sang for decades, his professional recording career did not begin until 2014, when he released his debut album Sabougla Voices at the age of 81. The record showcased his raw, soulful style and introduced him to a wider audience.


Welch followed with additional albums, including I Don’t Prefer No Blues (2015), blending gospel and blues influences with authenticity and passion. His music was celebrated for its honesty, energy, and deep connection to the traditions of Mississippi.


Despite beginning his recording career late in life, Welch toured internationally, performing at festivals and venues across the United States and Europe. His story inspired many, demonstrating that creativity and opportunity can flourish at any age.
