Specialist Four Raymond Richard Wright, United States Army, passed away on September 24, 1999, at the age of 52. Born on December 5, 1946, in Moriah, New York, Wright devoted his life to military service, earning recognition as a courageous combat soldier and decorated veteran.


Wright enlisted in the Army in 1965 and served with Company A, 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division during the Vietnam War. His most notable act of valor occurred on May 2, 1967, near Ap Bac, Vietnam. When his unit came under intense enemy fire, Wright charged enemy positions with grenades, destroying multiple bunkers and forcing the enemy to retreat. His fearless actions saved countless lives and turned the tide of battle. For his extraordinary heroism, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military decoration.


Throughout his service, Wright received numerous honors, including the Medal of Honor, Purple Heart, and other commendations recognizing his bravery and devotion to duty. His actions exemplified the courage and resilience of the American soldier.


After his military service, Wright returned to New York, where he lived a quiet life with his family. He remained a humble figure, respected by his community and honored nationally for his sacrifice.


Specialist Four Raymond R. Wright will be remembered not only for his military achievements but also for his humility, resilience, and devotion to family and community. His legacy stands as a testament to the courage and selflessness of the United States Army.
