Oscar Perkins, a sweet and soulful mixed-breed pup, passed away peacefully in Lexington, KY on November 6, 2025, following a brief illness. He was 13 years old. Oscar joined our family when he was just 11 months old, adopted from the county animal shelter. From the moment we met him, we couldn’t understand how anyone could have let him go. He was gentle, affectionate, and had a quiet wisdom that made everyone feel at ease. He quickly became a cherished member of our family, and his absence now leaves a space that words can’t quite fill. He was known by many names, but one of the most special was “Swirly the Bearded”—a nickname born from a story written by Ally when she was just a child. In her tale, Oscar was a brave and kind pirate hero, and in real life, he lived up to that role in every way. He was our peacemaker, always intervening in moments of tension (even during card games!) with a soft nuzzle or a concerned glance. He hated conflict and preferred harmony, a trait that made him beloved by all who met him. Oscar was a creature of comfort and routine. His favorite pastime was napping on top of the couch, where he permanently smushed the pillow into a shape that only he found perfect. He fancied himself a hunter, often chasing squirrels and birds with great enthusiasm, though he never actually caught anything. Still, he carried himself with the pride of a seasoned tracker. Walks were a daily joy, especially when shared with his brother and sister, Thor and Bella. He would whine with excitement whenever he saw other dogs or people, eager to make a new friend. Oscar was also an excellent travel companion, joining us on countless road trips and always settling in with ease, as long as there was a cozy spot to nap. Oscar was deeply loved by his family, Elizabeth Perkins and Ally Biebel, and by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His gentle spirit, quirky habits, and unwavering sweetness will be remembered with love and gratitude. A memorial service to honor Oscar’s life will be held in Lexington, KY on November 15, 2025. He was cremated, and while there will be no formal burial, his memory will live on in the hearts of those who adored him. Rest well, Oscar—our comfort, our companion, our quiet joy, and forever our Swirly the Bearded.
